The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is a worldwide community showcasing
123,000 members from the civil engineering profession. Founded in 1852, ASCE
will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2002.The society is recognized
as America's oldest national engineering society.ASCE's objectives, at the
professional and student level, include supporting educational pursuits, advancing
technology, endorsing the civil engineering profession, and developing global
leadership. At the university level, ASCE sponsors over 200 student chapters
that strive to excel in accomplishing these goals.
The UCF student chapter of ASCE was established in 1971 and has been active
throughout the years. Regular meetings allow students to join together in
the pursuit of enhancing education, community involvement, and leadership
opportunities. In the past, ASCE members have made it a priority to socialize
together during meetings, picnics, barbecues, and late-night socials. Because
of the extensive involvement of members in activities, ASCE has become an
effective method that allows students to establish contacts within the university
and in the engineering profession.
ASCE is best known for our involvement in engineering competitions. Every year, we attend the Southeast Regional Engineering Competition that hosts over twenty universities. ASCE students spend months creating team projects to enter in the competition. The members are responsible for every aspect of their project including fund-raising, design, construction, presentation, and management. In the past, we have won numerous awards in the various competitions. In previous years, the UCF-ASCE chapter has won at the Regional Competition and continued to the National Engineering Competition to win there. Considering the intense level of competition between the universities, winning at the Regional or National level is an incredible honor. ASCE also competes and participates in local and state engineering fairs and competitions as teams and individuals.
An integral mission of the student chapter is to foster activities, apart
from engineering competitions and projects, that are beneficial to the surrounding
community. For several years, we have volunteered for Project Create which
is an engineering competition for middle-school students. One of our traditions
is to sponsor softball and golf tournaments that involve local engineering
companies. We have also participated in Habitat for Humanity, walk-a-thon's,
the Adopt-A-Highway program, and numerous other community activities. Currently,
ASCE strives to carry on the successful endeavors of past members and to incorporate
innovative projects and activities that fulfill ASCE's objectives.
