- Guest Speaker:
- Oscar Bello, P.E. visiting from Chen and Associates in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
- Former President of the UCF ASCE chapter.
- Chen and Associates is a small engineering firm, but is a very dynamic company. They offer many different services.
- Oscar discussed the importance of Soft Skills in the engineering marketplace.
- "The hard skills give you the energy. The soft skills get you the job."
- The 8 topics were:
- Get an internship or a co-op
- The position gives the student the chance to be able to work in a professional environment and gain experience in the workplace. The key is to find an internship that you like and will take something away with. It'll give you the insight into how most companies are managed.
- An internship can help you decide what you want to do.
- Learn the business
- One of the most important things you can ask once you get a professional job is "How does the company make money?" Knowing how the company makes money can help you understand your ultimate role in the company. It also shows that you're interested in something beyond your position.
- Invest in yourself
- Continue to grow yourself after you've graduated.
- You never stop learning.
- Try to find a mentor that will help you along the way.
- Get involved in the community
- Being able to give back is a great feeling, whether it's just a weekend a year or more.
- Find your mentor
- Someone with experience that is able to help you along the way.
- Your 'go-to' person for questions whether it's in their field or not.
- Enjoy what you do.
- Money means a lot less if you're not enjoying your work.
- It's often better to take a small pay cut to work somewhere you like than somewhere that you donŐt like.
- Don't forget to look at the entire package when it comes to pay. Health insurance and other bonuses make up a huge percentage but may not be highly apparent.
- Hone your communications skills
- Most of your job will involve communicating with other professionals. Your ability to convey ideas will be very important, whether it's through voicemail, email, or face to face.
- Technical speaking and writing are underrated in the academic undergrad and are very important in the professional office space.
- Keep your nose clean
- Engineering is an ethical profession and requires a high degree of integrity.
- Don't jeopardize that integrity.

Serves from February to February, posts weekly fliers concerning the club and club meetings, and writes the Annual Report.Chris Russo showed everyone the Annual Report that he's been working on. It's currently 99% complete and just waiting on a few more items before being printed out and sent to the National ASCE office. He also described his position in a little bit more detail, saying that it's one of the positions in the club that requires a little less work during the semester and would serve as being a great stepping stone towards being a President or Vice President of the club some day. The member holding this position also has the opportunity to attend section and national conferences. If you would like to nominate yourself or anyone else, mail Melike.
